Family & Community Life

West Boca isn’t just a collection of neighborhoods – it’s a vibrant community with wonderful opportunities for recreation, education, and togetherness. Whether you’re raising a family or enjoying retirement, our area offers a rich quality of life. From parks, community programs, and local attractions that make West Boca a great place to live.

One of the crown jewels of West Boca Raton is Burt Aaronson South County Regional Park. Spanning over 880 acres of former Everglades land, this massive park is packed with amenities for all ages. Here’s just a taste of what you’ll find at South County Regional Park:

Sports & Activities: The park features multiple sports complexes – including 4 lighted baseball fields, 4 lighted softball fields, 5 lighted soccer/multipurpose fields, 2 basketball courts, 6 new pickleball courts, 3 volleyball courts, and even 12 racquetball/handball courts. There’s also a 27-hole championship Osprey Point Golf Course (with driving range and pro shop) for golf enthusiasts right inside the park.

Family Attractions: Kids love the Coconut Cove Waterpark – especially on hot days. It boasts two tall water slides, a lazy river ride, an interactive water playground, and a pool, plus concessions for lunch. Adjacent is a large community playground (with sections for ages 2-5 and 5-12, including a barrier-free inclusive playground for children of all abilities). There are also picnic pavilions (which can be reserved for birthday parties) and countless single picnic tables with grills throughout the park for weekend barbecues.

Nature & Leisure: For a more tranquil experience, visit the Daggerwing Nature Center on the park’s west side. It features interactive exhibits, live animals (like snakes, butterflies, and an owl), and a boardwalk through the wetlands where you might spot turtles, birds, and even an alligator or two. The park also has a Dog Park (Canine Cove) where dogs can run off-leash in fenced areas for large and small dogs. Joggers, cyclists, and skaters enjoy miles of paved trails and sidewalks winding through the park, including a 2-mile pedestrian/bike path around the lake.

Events & Entertainment: The Sunset Cove Amphitheater, nestled in the park, is a beautiful outdoor venue that hosts concerts, festivals, and community events. From free movie nights to music tribute bands and the occasional big-name artist, keep an eye on the amphitheater’s event schedule (many events are sponsored by Palm Beach County or local organizations). The WBCC has helped promote events here – for example, recent concerts benefiting the community. It’s a treat to bring lawn chairs and enjoy live entertainment under the stars at Sunset Cove.

Beyond the regional park, West Boca has several community parks tucked within our neighborhoods.

  • Veterans Memorial Park (Palmetto Park Rd west of 441) has a great playground and picnic area.

  • Powderhorn Park and Boca Isles Park offer green spaces and walking paths for nearby residents.

  • Loggers’ Run Park complex includes sports fields and a skate park, often buzzing with youth sports leagues.

  • And for those who enjoy biking, South County Regional Park connects to the Everglades Conservation Levee Greenway – a trail atop the levee along the edge of the Everglades where you can bike for miles with panoramic views of natural Florida.

Whether you’re looking to exercise, play, or relax in nature, West Boca’s parks have you covered. Many are pet-friendly (leash rules apply except in dog parks) and all are free to use (some activities like golfing or the waterpark have fees).

We encourage families to explore these parks – pack a picnic, fly a kite, or catch a magnificent sunset by the lake.

  • Do not place paints, chemicals, batteries, or electronics in your regular trash or recycling carts, as they are dangerous and illegal to discard at the curb.

  • Instead, bring hazardous waste to the SWA Household Hazardous Waste drop-off center; the nearest facility for West Boca residents is at 13400 South State Road 7, and this service is free for residents.

  • Safely disposing of hazardous materials protects our environment and water supply.

Families with children will find excellent educational opportunities in West Boca. We are served by highly-rated public schools as part of the School District of Palm Beach County. Local elementary schools (such as Sandpiper Shores, Waters Edge, and Sunrise Park Elementary) feed into Loggers’ Run Middle School, Eagles Landing Middle School, Olympic Heights High School, and  West Boca Raton Community High School, home of the Bulls. West Boca High offers strong academics as well as unique choice programs (like Medical Sciences and Performing Arts academies) that attract students countywide. Many of our schools consistently earn A-ratings and have active PTA organizations supported by our involved parents.

For younger kids, there are numerous quality preschools and daycare centers in the area, plus programs like “Mommy and Me” classes often hosted at community centers or the library. Older students and adults can take advantage of nearby higher education institutions: Florida Atlantic University (FAU) and Palm Beach State College – Boca Raton campus are just a short drive east, offering everything from degree programs to continuing education and enrichment courses.

  • Lifelong learning is important in our community. The West Boca Branch Library (see County Services section) is a key resource, offering not just books but free lectures, technology training, and cultural events. Retirees might enjoy classes through the Palm Beach County Adult Education programs (which include computer classes, art, foreign languages, etc. often held at community schools in evenings). FAU’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in Boca Raton is another fantastic resource – it hosts non-credit courses and lectures designed for adult learners (with no exams or grades, just learning for pure enjoyment).

  • We also have a rich cultural scene thanks to being adjacent to Boca Raton city. The Boca Raton Museum of Art, Boca Ballet Theatre, and Performing Arts Theater at West Boca High all offer shows and activities that West Boca residents frequent. Even though we’re unincorporated, we fully partake in the educational and cultural offerings of greater Boca Raton.

  • Community tip: Keep an eye on the West Boca Community Council blog and Facebook page for announcements of local events like school fun fairs, charity 5K runs, or youth sports sign-ups. We love to celebrate the achievements of West Boca students and often share news about school events or how to get involved (such as mentoring or volunteering opportunities at our schools).
