“The Mayors’ Challenge” Girls Basketball Tournament for the Fight against Breast Cancer will feature Florida Senators, Boca Raton Mayor Susan Whelchel, and FAU Football Coach Howard Schnellenberger.
The Mayors’ Challenge is a Girls Basketball Tournament for the Boca Raton community that will benefit the South Florida Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, to help raise money and awareness for the fight against breast cancer. The Inaugural Tournament will include all four Boca Raton public high schools; Boca Raton High, Olympic Heights, Spanish River and host school West Boca Raton High, located at 1281 Glades Road 3 miles west of 441.
First round games will be Friday, January 8th, 2010 at 6:00pm and 7:30pm. On Saturday, January 9th, 2010 the consolation game will be at 6:30pm followed by the Championship at 8:30pm.
Prior to the Championship Game on Saturday, we will have The Mayor’s Challenge Free Throw Competition at 8:00pm. Boca Raton Mayor Susan Whelchel will compete against several local community leaders. West Boca High School Principal Mark Stenner, School Board Member-District 5 - Frank Barbieri, FAU Coach Howard Schnellenberger, and Florida Senators Ted Deutch and Jeff Atwater have all accepted “The Mayors’ Challenge”. Governor Charlie Crist is trying to work out scheduling details but we are hopeful.
“Mayor Whelchel accepted the Challenge in honor of her two sisters and in support of all who have been impacted by this terrible disease”.
Included during the week is “The Great Boca Raton Pink Out” on Friday, January 8, 2010. Faculty, staff and students from 20 Boca Raton schools (elementary, middle, and high) will participate by wearing pink all day Friday. City of Boca Raton Employees will be invited to participate as well.
