Uptick in Car Burglaries

9 Sep 2009

Captain Matt Eisenberg, who commands PBSO in West Boca, spoke to a standing room only crowd at the West Boca Community Council meeting last night. He startled everyone with news that 26 cars were burglarized in West Boca just within the last week. He also reported that the number of car burglaries is soaring throughout South Florida.

What’s really troublesome about those 26 car break-ins was that 2/3 were forced entries, nearly all a result of smashed windows. Not so long ago, some 80% of car burglaries in our area were of unlocked vehicles.

This data suggests that those who steal from cars are getting both bolder and more desperate for a score.  Locking one’s car is no longer sufficient.  With forced break-ins on the rise, it’s more important than ever to keep any valuables out of sight. Better still, don’t leave them in your car at all.
