In a recent West Boca Security Liaison Meeting, District Commander Matt Eisenberg advised “we can’t arrest away crime, prevention is key. Security is a partnership between local security services, the police and you”.
Car break-ins remain one of the most frequently recurring crimes, which is often preventable. Attendees were shown videotape at the meeting taken by a security camera in a local town home complex. The burglar, apparently aware of the active security cameras, wore a hooded shirt to mask his identity while boldly walking through the parking lot trying car door handles until he found one that a careless owner had left unlocked. He was chatting on his cell phone with his accomplice as he worked arranging for his pick-up once he scored.
These criminals work in teams and they have a plan. They are looking for people that 1) leave their car unlocked and 2) leave personal items in their parked car such as computers, cell phones, and GPS systems. They are also scouting for large SUVs to steal with the intent to use one as a getaway car during home invasion burglaries. The powerful SUVs can easily navigate terrain that would be much more challenging for a compact sedan and are capable of storing a large cargo of stolen items.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s office reported 59 car burglaries in the county during the month of June.
What can you do to help protect yourself and your neighbors?
1. Report suspicious activity immediately to the Sheriff’s office at 995-2800 and record the time and date of the incident.
2. If your home has a security alarm system, use it.
3. Record the serial numbers of your items. This information is vital in the recovery of your stolen property.
And please do not forget to LOCK YOUR PARKED CAR!
