Park Precautions

20 Jun 2009

Auto burglaries in our county parks are on the rise.

Park security deputies say that most such crimes are of the smash and grab type.  Some of the thieves use a center hole punch designed to break glass quickly and quietly.  They then reach into the vehicle and grab what’s in plain view.

If credit cards are stolen, the thieves go to a nearby gas station pump to test the cards.  If one of them works, they continue to use it elsewhere.  Often this is happening while the victims are enjoying themselves in the park or elsewhere, oblivious to their plight.

Park deputies recommend keeping a list of all important bank and credit card information accessible in case you have to cancel your cards ASAP.  Take extra precautions such as keeping all items of value out of sight, preferably by storing them in locked compartments within the car.
