This FREE event will include guest speakers, live animal shows, crafts, tours, exhibitors, games, prizes, face painting, and fun activities for the whole family!
Presentation Tent:
10:00 am – Folke Peterson Wildlife Release
Virginia Bowen from Folke Peterson will release a rehabilitated Coopers Hawk to kick off theday! A short discussion about how the bird was injured and the care given will precede the release.
11:00 am – Raptor Chapter by Okeeheelee Nature Center
Clive Pinnock from Okeeheelee Nature Center will present several of their live birds of prey, which are all protected under Florida law: Great Horned Owl, Red-shouldered Hawk, etc.
12:00 pm – The Life of a Butterfly: Storytelling by Pretend Party Productions
Pretend Party Productions will use puppets and music to tell about the life cycle of a butterfly.
1:00 pm – Beneficial Insects and Ladybug Release by Daggerwing Nature Center
Insects can be an environmentally-friendly way to control pest insects, as opposed to using chemicals, which can harm other animals and even pollute our water. Participants will be given the opportunity to release live ladybugs into our butterfly garden, which are a natural predator of pest aphids.
2:00 pm – Reptile Show by Green Cay Nature Center
Donald Campbell from Green Cay Nature Center will present variety of impressive live reptiles, and will teach us how they each are perfectly adapted for survival in their habitats.
Earth Day Activities:
Earth Day Games (all day) / Recycling Bingo (10:30 am & 1:30 pm) – Classroom
Play and learn fun facts about recycling! Earth Day prizes will be awarded to the winners.*
Crafts – Laboratory
Visit the lab, and make a craft you can take home.*
Animal Encounters – Nature Center
Volunteers will be roaming the nature center with our live educational animals (snakes and tortoises).
Guided Boardwalk Tours – Meet in Lobby
A half- hour tour of our lake and swamp habitats. Guides willpoint out unique flora and fauna and explain why these habitats are so special.
Face Painting – Veranda
Maria Rigsby and Virginia Bowen will be painting special Earth Day designs!
Exhibitors – Porch
Astronomical Society of the Palm Beaches – will have an astrophotography display and solar telescopes for viewing!
Audubon Society of the Everglades – will have information available on how to help our feathered friends!
Okeeheelee Nature Center – will have their birds of prey on display – great photo opportunity!
Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control -- will have information about animal adoptions and their many services!
