County Commissioners Kill University Drive

After nearly a decade of tumultuous struggle, the extension of University Drive through the western part of West Boca appears to have sunk into the canal separating Broward and Palm Beach County.  For all practical purposes, this case is closed.

The County Commissioners heard testimony from both sides this morning.  Lawyers and city management officials representing Coral Springs and Coconut Creek pleaded with the Commissioners to delay their vote until all the various studies that are part of the settlement are completed, which would have left University Drive on the drawing board for years more.

The other side was ably represented by President Sheri Scarborough, 1st VP Frank Barbieri, past President Milton Brenner and Director Tom Berger from the West Boca Community Council, Loggers Run President Cynthia Freedman and past President Marvin Manning from Century Village, all of whom addressed the Commissioners.  Jeff Vogel, a concerned homeowner from Mission Bay, drove to the meeting in West Palm Beach after seeing mention of it in a news report and lent his eloquent voice to the cause as well.

The West Boca contingent was reinforced by allies Mort Mazor, 1st Vice President of the Alliance of Delray Residential Associations and Ken Lassiter, the new President of the Coalition of Boynton West Residential Associations, both of whom spoke eloquently in support of West Boca’s case.

After everyone had their say, the Commissioners voted 7 to 0 in favor of the Comprehensive Plan Amendment brokered by PBC’s Assistant Attorney Amy Petrick,  which won decisive support at both the county and state level for alternatives to extending University Drive through western West Boca.
